A Lagos Magistrates’ Court has ordered a 51-year-old man into custody over an allegation involving an eight-year-old girl, with the case now awaiting legal advice from the state’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
A Lagos Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba has ordered the remand of 51-year-old Kamorudeen Balogun over the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl.
Balogun was brought before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola following a charge filed by the Commissioner of Police.
Police prosecutor ASP Lucky Ihehie told the court that the alleged incident occurred on May 25, 2026, in the Alakuko area of Lagos State.
The charge alleges that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with the child, an offence brought under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Balogun’s plea was not taken.
The prosecution subsequently asked the court to remand him while legal advice is obtained from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
Magistrate Tanimola granted the application and ordered that Balogun be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the DPP’s advice.
The court also directed that the case file be duplicated and transmitted to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned for mention.
The case brings Section 137 of the Lagos Criminal Law back into focus. The provision criminalises defilement of a child and prescribes severe punishment following conviction.
At this stage, however, the allegation against Balogun has not been proved. He remains presumed innocent unless and until the prosecution establishes the charge before a competent court.
