As part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has granted state pardon to 36 inmates serving various sentences at the Ilesa and Ile-Ife correctional centres.
The amnesty was announced in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday in Osogbo.
According to the statement, the decision was made pursuant to Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The beneficiaries, both men and women convicted mostly of minor offences such as stealing and conspiracy, had already served substantial portions of their jail terms. Out of the total, 29 inmates were released from the Ilesa correctional centre, while seven were freed from the Ile-Ife facility.

Governor Adeleke said the gesture reflected the ideals of compassion, justice, and renewal, which Nigeria’s Independence Day embodies.
“As a government of the people, we remain committed to justice while extending mercy to deserving citizens,” Adeleke stated, noting that the pardons symbolise not only freedom but also the opportunity for rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start for the affected individuals.
