Preparations have been concluded for the burial of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away last week after a prolonged illness. Today, the nation pays its final respects to a distinguished military leader who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.
Arrival of Remains
On Thursday, at precisely 12:18 p.m., the remains of the late Chief of Army Staff were flown into Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. A solemn procession accompanied the arrival, reflecting the profound loss felt by the nation and the military community.
Service of Songs
The funeral rites began with a Service of Songs held at the Mogadishu Cantonment, a significant venue for military events. Top officials from all branches of Nigeria’s security forces, family members, and well-wishers attended the ceremony.
Tributes to a Born Leader
During the Service of Songs, tributes flowed from those who worked closely with the late army chief. Maj.-Gen. Kelvin Aligbe, Commander of Training and Doctrine Command, spoke on behalf of the 39 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He described Lagbaja as a natural leader whose service and commitment inspired many.
“He was a born leader who exemplified dedication and service. To honor his legacy, we must uphold the values he championed – the unity of Nigeria and unwavering service to the nation. He gave his all, and I hope we reciprocated enough,” Aligbe said, highlighting the late general’s emphasis on unity and patriotism.
Reflections from the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association
Representing the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, Bilikisu Ibrahim also paid a heartfelt tribute. She lauded Lagbaja’s unwavering faith and his ability to inspire confidence even in the most challenging times.
“To those he served, he was a source of unwavering strength, a protector in the face of chaos and threats. Beyond his military duty, he was a man of profound faith, drawing strength from his spirituality to navigate life’s darkest battles,” she said.
Interment at the National Military Cemetery
Today, the final phase of the funeral proceedings takes place at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja. The interment ceremony is expected to be attended by dignitaries, senior military personnel, and other notable figures, underscoring the significant impact Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja had on Nigeria’s defense system.
