A 28-year-old internet fraudster, commonly referred to as a ‘Yahoo-Yahoo boy’, has voluntarily turned himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at its Benin Zonal Directorate.

According to a statement released by the anti-graft agency, the suspect—who hails from Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State—appeared before the Acting Zonal Director, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Effam Okim, on Monday, April 8.

“I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf,” the suspect confessed, expressing remorse over his involvement in cybercrime, particularly romance scams targeting foreign nationals.

The EFCC disclosed that the fraudster posed as a Chinese medical doctor operating in a war-torn country. Using a mobile translator app, he lured victims into fake online relationships, exploiting emotional vulnerability to extort money.

In a related development, the EFCC also resumed the prosecution of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Mamman is facing charges of laundering over ₦33.8 billion linked to the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric projects.

During the court session, the prosecution played a video of Mamman’s confessional statement in which he admitted to making repeated cash payments to avoid banking records, citing concerns over scrutiny due to his civil servant status.

The EFCC continues its efforts in combating economic and financial crimes across the country, encouraging voluntary surrender and cooperation from individuals willing to renounce fraudulent practices.
