Trump Backs Voluntary AI Safeguards Amid Fears

Washington is betting that the world’s most powerful AI companies can police themselves. With public anxiety rising, the Trump administration is resisting binding federal restrictions and backing voluntary safeguards instead — reopening the global debate over who should control artificial intelligence.

The Trump administration is maintaining its preference for voluntary artificial-intelligence safeguards rather than imposing a broad mandatory regulatory system on leading technology companies.

The policy was spotlighted after a White House engagement involving executives and representatives from major AI companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Google and Nvidia.

Participating companies backed commitments involving internal safety controls and independent or third-party assessments, but the framework does not carry statutory enforcement mechanisms or penalties comparable with binding regulation.

President Donald Trump has argued that excessive regulation could slow American innovation and weaken the United States in its technological competition with China. Reuters

The approach comes as lawmakers, researchers and sections of the public demand stronger oversight of increasingly powerful AI systems.

The legal issue is becoming unavoidable: if voluntary standards fail, questions of liability, consumer protection, privacy, discrimination, copyright and responsibility for AI-caused harm will increasingly move into legislatures and courts.

For lawyers and regulators worldwide, the US approach could influence whether future AI governance is dominated by industry self-regulation or enforceable public-law standards.
