Sokoto Gunmen: The death toll from the deadly gunmen attack in Sokoto State has risen to 74, following coordinated assaults on several rural communities in the Sabon Birni axis of the state.
The attacks, which occurred on Wednesday, affected multiple villages, leaving scores dead, several others injured, and entire communities displaced as residents fled for safety.
According to reports, Garki Village recorded the highest number of fatalities with 25 persons killed, while 13 residents were slaughtered in Dan Aduwa Village. In Kutama Village, six people were killed, and one individual was abducted by the attackers.
Further findings revealed that 25 bodies were discovered in Kuzari Village, while Masawa Village recorded the deaths of five persons, including children, underscoring the brutality of the attacks.

Survivors with severe injuries are currently receiving medical treatment at the Sabon Birni General Hospital, where health workers are said to be battling to stabilise victims amid limited resources.

Sources within the affected communities disclosed that the bodies of those killed are being prepared for burial, in line with Islamic rites, as families mourn their loved ones.
The attacks have triggered a humanitarian crisis, with villagers fleeing en masse to neighbouring communities, while many families remain uncertain about the fate of relatives who were unaccounted for at the time of the violence.
Residents alleged that some of the attackers were armed herders, who reportedly exploited longstanding tensions to launch attacks on farming communities after being prevented from grazing their cattle on farmlands. These claims further highlight the deepening farmer–herder conflict in parts of northern Nigeria.
The Sokoto gunmen attack death toll has renewed public concern over rural insecurity and the vulnerability of isolated communities to armed violence, as calls intensify for urgent security intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
