The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is currently receiving medical treatment in London, United Kingdom, following a reported collapse earlier this month, raising concerns over his health and absence from key legislative engagements.
Sources within the National Assembly disclosed that Akpabio reportedly collapsed on December 10, 2025, and was subsequently flown to London aboard a private jet. Since then, he has remained hospitalised, undergoing medical care that has kept him away from official duties in Abuja.
As a result of his condition, the Senate President was notably absent from the interactive session on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), a critical engagement between the executive and the legislature that shapes Nigeria’s medium-term fiscal and economic planning.
According to multiple sources, this is not the first time Senator Akpabio has been evacuated abroad for medical treatment, with concerns now mounting over the seriousness of his condition and its implications for his workload as head of the upper legislative chamber. It was further revealed that several senators have travelled to London to visit him during his hospitalisation.

Sources also indicated that medical professionals attending to the Senate President have advised him to significantly reduce his workload, with some reportedly recommending that he prioritise his health.
During the MTEF/FSP session, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi represented Akpabio, confirming his inability to attend the important budget-related meeting in person.
Akpabio’s last major public engagement was on December 9, 2025, when the Senate approved President Bola Tinubu’s request for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin to support regional security efforts following an attempted coup. Announcing the decision at plenary, Akpabio described the approval as a necessary step to safeguard regional stability, noting that insecurity in neighbouring countries poses a direct threat to Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the Senate Presidency regarding Akpabio’s health status, timeline for return, or any interim leadership arrangements.
