Federal authorities have ordered investigations into the deaths of suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State.
The detainees had reportedly been arrested during enforcement operations around mining locations in Minna. Public reports differ on the precise death toll, with figures ranging from 33 to 37, making the ongoing investigation important for establishing the verified number and circumstances surrounding the deaths.
President Bola Tinubu directed that the investigation examine the circumstances of the arrests, detention conditions, number of persons held at the facility, medical care provided and events immediately preceding the deaths.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also ordered an investigation, while the NSCDC Niger State Commandant and other relevant officers were directed to step aside pending the inquiry.
The case raises significant legal questions surrounding the constitutional rights to life and dignity, as well as the responsibility of public authorities for persons placed in state custody.
