Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2024 election, has strongly condemned the killing of Supersport TV crew members in a tragic ambush along the Ihiala-Orlu Road in Anambra State.

The incident, which occurred on October 8, 2024, resulted in the deaths of a cameraman, a police officer, and a bus driver. The crew was en route to cover the Nigeria vs. Libya 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which took place in Uyo and ended in a 1-0 victory for the Super Eagles on October 11.

Reacting to the incident on his X handle, Obi lamented the increasing wave of insecurity in Nigeria, stating that kidnappings and killings have become rampant. He expressed concern over the rising violence, highlighting that Nigerians are struggling to keep track of the lives lost due to insecurity.

In his post, Obi wrote: “The never-ending incidents of killings, kidnappings, and other violent crimes across the country have continued to be of concern to many. The situation has continued unabated and is worse by the day. Non-state actors have continued to inflict pain and sorrow on families whose loved ones are often kidnapped and sometimes killed in gruesome manners.”

Specifically addressing the Supersport incident, he said, “In particular, I condemn, in totality, the unfortunate killing of some crew members of Supersport TV, who were attacked in a tragic ambush along the Ihiala-Orlu Road, Anambra State, a few days ago. These media practitioners were on their way to Uyo to perform official duty for their medium and, indeed, the nation when the tragic incident happened, resulting in their death and the kidnapping of others.”

Obi further highlighted a recent terror attack in the Agatu local government area of Benue State, where several people lost their lives, emphasising that many such attacks go unreported. He questioned how long the nation would tolerate such losses before decisive action is taken.
