The Oyo State Government has detained the organisers of a children’s party in Ibadan that ended in tragedy, claiming multiple lives. The event was co-hosted by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat. Governor Seyi Makinde announced the arrests and expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
Oyo Government Arrests Organisers Over Tragic Stampede at Children’s Party
The stampede occurred on Wednesday morning at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, during a festive event meant for children. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as attendees scrambled for safety, leading to the trampling of many children.
Several were confirmed dead, while others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Though the exact number of fatalities remains unclear, the tragic incident has left the local community in shock.
Governor Makinde Vows Justice and Commences Investigations
In a press statement shared on his X profile, Governor Makinde confirmed the multiple fatalities and injuries. He reassured the public that all involved in organising the event would be held accountable. The statement detailed immediate steps taken by the government, including deploying security personnel to restore order, medical teams to assist victims, and halting the event.
Governor Makinde also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, stating, “This is a very sad day for us in Oyo State. We sympathise with the parents whose joy has turned to mourning. Investigations are ongoing, and anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.”
Makinde concluded by urging calm and promising thorough justice, adding, “Our hearts remain with the families impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
