NIMC: Nigerians Set To Pay For New National ID Cards

NIMC Introduces Paid Model for New Multipurpose National ID Cards

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that Nigerians must pay for the newly introduced multipurpose national identity cards. According to NIMC, this decision stems from limited government revenue and aims to address inefficiencies in the past issuance processes.

NIMC: Payment Model Explained

Peter Iwegbu, head of card management services at NIMC, disclosed the development during a press conference in Lagos. He explained that the new payment-based approach is designed to ensure only those who genuinely need the cards will apply for them, unlike previous initiatives where millions of free physical cards were produced but remained uncollected.

“Before we stopped due to funding, we produced more than two million cards, but a lot of them are still in our office. People were not able to pick them up because they didn’t need them,” Iwegbu noted.

He also highlighted the financial constraints faced by the government, stating, “The government’s limited revenue is a major factor in the decision to make Nigerians pay for the new ID cards.”

NIMC: Streamlined Distribution and Access

The team is working in collaboration with banks to simplify access. Nigerians will be able to walk into participating banks, request the card, and choose a convenient pickup location.

Lanre Yusuf, NIMC’s director of information technology, described the initiative as a “post-paid identity card” system. Applicants will need to pay, select a pickup point, and collect their cards from the designated location.

Yusuf also emphasized that special provisions have been made for less privileged Nigerians who require the card for accessing government support but cannot afford it.

Features of the New ID Card

The multipurpose ID cards are designed to serve a variety of functions, including:

  • Identity verification
  • Financial transactions
  • Accessing government services

The cards will soon be launched, with sample test cards already received by the NIMC.

Government’s Commitment to Inclusivity

NIMC officials stressed that this initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equality. It aims to ensure that everyone, especially the underserved, can access vital government services while promoting efficient resource management.

The new paid model represents a shift in how national identity management is approached, aligning with the need for sustainability and functionality in service delivery.
