A disturbing video circulating on social media has sparked outrage after showing a Nigerian policeman assaulting a motorist for wearing AI-powered glasses at a checkpoint.

The footage, posted by Objectv Media on Facebook on Friday, shows the officer repeatedly harassing the driver, questioning him about the glasses, and attempting to forcibly remove them from his face. At one point, the officer slapped the motorist despite the latter presenting his driver’s licence and vehicle documents.

In the video, the motorist is heard protesting, “Can’t I wear glasses again? These are my glasses, I bought it, can’t I wear it?” The officer, however, accused him of “recording policemen” with the glasses, shouting, “Why do you put us on camera?” before striking him.

The confrontation drew further protests from the motorist, who exclaimed, “Why are you hitting me? What have I done wrong? Don’t I have the right to wear my glasses?”

The incident has reignited public anger over police misconduct, with many Nigerians recalling the #EndSARS protests of October 2020, which called for an end to police brutality and led to the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Critics argue that despite reforms promised, abuse of power and impunity remain widespread.

Public reactions to the video have been fierce. One commentator, Tunji Olanrewaju, wrote, “This is enough to prosecute the police officer.” Another, Princess Kudirat Atinuke Adewuyi, noted, “Dem dey fear camera but dey take bribe.” Others described the officer as a “criminal in uniform” and a “threat to citizens’ safety.”

The video has fueled renewed calls for accountability and reforms within the Nigerian Police Force, with many demanding that the officer involved face immediate investigation and disciplinary action.
