Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates have moved to tighten enforcement against cross-border drug trafficking through a new agreement focused on intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the UAE’s National Drug Enforcement Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen cooperation against illicit drug trafficking.
The agreement was signed on September 26 on the sidelines of the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.) said the arrangement would strengthen intelligence-sharing and joint enforcement along the Nigeria-UAE corridor.
According to figures released by the agency, approximately 354.7 kilograms of illicit drugs concealed in consignments destined for the UAE were intercepted between 2021 and 2026, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of 47 suspects.
The agreement is also expected to expand operational-information exchange and technical cooperation between both agencies.
