The leadership dispute within the African Women Lawyers Association has entered a new phase after AWLA International issued a seven-day cease-and-desist warning to a faction operating in Nigeria.
The Executive Council of the African Women Lawyers Association International has issued a seven-day ultimatum to members of a Nigerian faction it describes as a breakaway group.
In a position statement dated September 25 and signed by Secretary General Sakinah Adepeju Oduye-Quadri, the international body directed the affected persons to stop presenting themselves as officers of the association or face further legal action.
AWLA International said the dispute concerns the structure and leadership of its Nigerian chapter and maintained that the organisation operates under a unified constitution and uniform bye-laws.
The statement represents AWLA International’s position in an ongoing internal dispute; claims made against the other faction remain contested assertions rather than judicial findings.
The association said it would take steps to protect its name, structure and institutional assets if the ultimatum is not complied with.
