The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has expressed concern over the judgment of the Federal High Court directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister certain political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), despite issues relating to the matter being before the Court of Appeal.
Speaking at the 2026 Law Week of the NBA Gombe Branch on Tuesday 16th June, 2026 at about 11am, the NBA President emphasised the need for strict adherence to the hierarchy of courts and respect for the appellate process.
He noted that where proceedings are pending before an appellate court, every effort should be made to avoid actions capable of undermining the authority of the court or creating uncertainty within the judicial system.
According to him, public confidence in the administration of justice is strengthened when judicial processes are conducted in a manner that reflects consistency, due process, and fidelity to the rule of law, particularly in matters with significant implications for democratic governance.

Shortly after his remarks, the Court of Appeal granted an order staying further action on the judgment directing the deregistration of the affected political parties pending the determination of the appeal, effectively suspending the enforcement of the judgment.
