The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held a crucial State of the Nation Discourse at the NBA Secretariat Auditorium in Abuja, focusing on “Strengthening Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria.”
The event featured esteemed speakers, including Hon. Justice Ejembi Eko, JSC (Rtd.), and Mr. Tijani Gazali, SAN, who represented the Attorney General of the Federation. Discussions centred on the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in Attorney General of the Federation v. Attorney General of Abia State & 35 Others, particularly regarding local Government financial autonomy.

Key stakeholders, including representatives from the Code of Conduct Bureau, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and seasoned legal practitioners, provided expert insights on implementing this decision.
The NBA reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the full enforcement of this judgment and calls on all levels of government to respect local government autonomy, as enshrined in the Constitution.
