In a strong demonstration of its commitment to grooming the next generation of legal professionals, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) hosted a special mentoring session for young lawyers, spearheaded by its Mentoring Committee.
The event, which drew participants from across the legal spectrum, was graced by leading senior members of the Bar, who shared time-tested insights and career-shaping counsel with aspiring practitioners.
Representing the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, at the event was Chief Emeka JP Obegolu, SAN—Chairman of the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference Planning Committee—who delivered the President’s welcome address on his behalf.
In his stirring remarks, the NBA President warmly welcomed all participants, describing the session as a critical step in shaping the future of the legal profession in Nigeria.

“It is with immense pleasure and a deep sense of purpose that I welcome you all to this important session on mentoring young lawyers,” he stated. “Today, we gather to reflect, inspire, and chart a path toward nurturing the next generation of legal practitioners who will uphold the rule of law, advance justice, and shape the future of our noble profession in Nigeria and beyond.”
He emphasized that the legal profession is more than a career—it is a sacred calling that demands intellectual depth, moral integrity, and an unwavering dedication to service.
According to him, mentorship is the vital bridge between ambition and impact, helping young lawyers not only to master legal knowledge but to internalize the values and ethics that define true professionalism.
“Mentorship is the compass that helps young lawyers find their footing in a profession that can be as challenging as it is rewarding,” he noted. “Through mentorship, we pass on not just technical knowledge but also wisdom and practical insight that no textbook can capture.”
The President acknowledged the efforts of the NBA Mentoring Committee in creating a platform that fosters learning, leadership, and intergenerational connection.
He called on senior members of the Bar to remain steadfast in their role as mentors and urged young lawyers to be intentional in seeking guidance and growth.
“To our young lawyers, seize this opportunity. Be curious, be bold, and be open to growth. And to our seniors, continue to be the beacons of inspiration our profession so greatly needs,” he advised.
As the session progressed, participants engaged in robust discussions, shared personal experiences, and explored actionable strategies to build a vibrant mentorship culture within the Bar.

In closing, Chief Obegolu, SAN, conveyed the NBA President’s charge for collective action:
“Let us commit to building a mentorship ecosystem that empowers every young lawyer to thrive. Together, we can strengthen the Nigerian Bar and ensure that our profession remains a pillar of justice, equity, and national development.”
The mentorship session was not only enriching but reaffirmed the NBA’s unwavering commitment to institutionalizing mentorship as a core pillar of professional development for lawyers in Nigeria.
