The Nigerian Bar Association Gwagwalada Branch has joined the NBA Garki Branch in a campaign aimed at strengthening awareness of patients’ rights and promoting safer healthcare delivery.
The Patients’ Rights and Safety Awareness/Sensitisation Campaign was organised by the Medical and Health Law Committee of the NBA Garki Branch in commemoration of World Patient Safety Day 2026.
The programme was held at the FCT College of Nursing Sciences, Gwagwalada, on September 18.
It was themed “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases”, with the slogan “Safe Care for Life.”
Representatives of both branches participated in discussions on patients’ rights, healthcare safety and the role of law in encouraging responsible healthcare delivery.
Those present included the Chairman of the NBA Garki Branch, officials and members of its Medical and Health Law Committee, and the Chairman of NBA Gwagwalada Branch, N. D. Abdusalam, Esq., alongside members of his Executive Committee.
The initiative reflects growing attention within the legal profession to medical law and patients’ rights.
Healthcare disputes increasingly involve issues such as informed consent, confidentiality, emergency treatment, professional negligence, access to medical records and the standard of care expected from healthcare institutions and practitioners.
Public understanding of these rights can be particularly important because many disputes begin long before a matter reaches a courtroom.
Patients who understand their rights are better positioned to request information, raise concerns and document treatment, while healthcare providers who understand their legal responsibilities can reduce the risk of preventable disputes.
The collaboration between the two NBA branches therefore demonstrates how Bar activities can extend beyond litigation into preventive legal education.
