The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Calabar Branch (The Doyen Bar), on Thursday, 25 June 2026, held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to commemorate the first anniversary of the current Executive Committee led by its Chairman, Enome James Amatey, Esq.
The meeting, which brought together members of the Bar, provided an opportunity for the Executive Committee to present its stewardship report, highlighting achievements recorded over the past year while reaffirming its commitment to sustaining the progress of the association.
Presenting the administration’s scorecard, Mr. Amatey expressed profound appreciation to members of the Bar for their relentless dedication, commitment, and solidarity, noting that their active participation in Bar activities had contributed significantly to the remarkable successes recorded by the Executive Committee since assuming office one year ago.
He also commended members of the Executive Committee for their steadfast commitment to building a stronger and more progressive Doyen Bar. According to him, the achievements recorded during the period were made possible through the collective efforts of the Executive Committee, the Bar Advisory Council, and the various committees of the association.

The Chairman outlined several landmark accomplishments of the administration, beginning with the successful constitution of the Doyen Bar Executive Committee in strict compliance with the Uniform Bye-Laws of the Nigerian Bar Association.
He stated that the administration had also maintained a functional, viable, and productive Bar Secretariat to enhance service delivery and meet the professional needs of members.
In furtherance of the association’s constitutional mandate, Mr. Amatey disclosed that the Executive Committee had consistently upheld the rule of law through the protection and promotion of the fundamental human rights of members of the public, as guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), through its Human Rights Committee led by the Doyen Bar Vice Chairman, Joseph Apajung, Esq.
He further highlighted the establishment of a robust and effective publicity framework that has continued to project the positive image of the Bar while strengthening public confidence in the legal profession.
According to him, the administration also recorded a significant increase in the association’s internally generated revenue and overall financial standing through prudent financial management and improved revenue generation strategies.

The Chairman equally noted that the Executive Committee had sustained an unprecedented level of unity among members, a development he described as instrumental to the smooth implementation of the administration’s programmes and policies.
On members’ welfare, Mr. Amatey stated that the Executive Committee introduced and strengthened welfare initiatives designed to improve the wellbeing of members while fostering greater inclusiveness and participation in Bar activities.
He also pointed to the cordial and mutually beneficial relationship established between the Bar and the Bench during the period under review, describing it as a major milestone that has enhanced cooperation, promoted the effective administration of justice, and reinforced professional ethics within the legal community.
According to him, the cumulative impact of these initiatives has resulted in significant progress for the Calabar Branch and contributed to the professional growth and excellence of its members.
Reaffirming the Executive Committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate, Mr. Amatey assured members that the administration would continue to pursue policies and programmes aimed at strengthening the association, promoting the rule of law, protecting the interests of members, and preserving the enviable reputation of the Doyen Bar.
Members at the meeting applauded the leadership of the current Executive Committee and expressed optimism that the association would continue on its path of unity, institutional development, and professional excellence.
The Annual General Meeting also served as an avenue for members to review the affairs of the association, deliberate on issues affecting the legal profession, and reaffirm their collective commitment to advancing the ideals and objectives of the Nigerian Bar Association.
