The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Calabar Branch, (the Doyen Bar) has on 15th April, 2026, commenced its annual Bar Week with a series of impactful and community centered activities, setting a strong tone for a week dedicated to promoting the rule of law, democratic values, and institutional accountability.
The opening event, a City Walk for Good Governance, brought together legal practitioners, stakeholders, and members of the public in a visible demonstration of the Bar’s commitment to strengthening democratic ideals. The walk underscored this year’s theme, emphasizing the critical role of the legal profession in upholding the rule of law, safeguarding democracy, and ensuring accountability in governance.
In furtherance of its public service mandate, the branch organized a free legal clinic, providing members of the public with access to legal advice and services at no cost. The initiative was widely lauded as a meaningful intervention aimed at bridging the justice gap and enhancing access to legal support for underserved communities.
The day’s activities culminated in an opening cocktail reception hosted by the Chief Judge of Cross River State and Chairman of the Cross River State Judicial Service Commission, His Lordship, Honourable Justice Akon B. Ikpeme. The event was marked by a warm atmosphere of love, unity and mutual respect, symbolizing the enduring partnership between the Bar and the Bench.
