On December 24, 2024, a Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, ordered the remand of Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Abdullah Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, and Oriyomi Hamzat, a private radio station owner in Ibadan.
They are facing serious charges of conspiracy and murder linked to a tragic stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair in Ibadan on December 18, which claimed the lives of 35 children.
The court proceedings took place before Chief Magistrate Bisi Ogunkanmi at the Iyaganku Magistrate Court. The stampede occurred at a Christmas funfair organized by Ogunwusi and was notable for its high attendance, which eventually led to chaos and the devastating loss of life.
In addition to Ogunwusi, Fasasi, and Hamzat, several others were arrested in connection to the incident; however, six suspects were released on the night before the court session.
The police prosecutor presented a four-count charge against the three defendants. According to the police, the actions of Ogunwusi, Fasasi, and Hamzat significantly contributed to the circumstances that led to the deadly stampede, which has raised questions about the event’s organization and safety measures.
The charges fall under Section 324 of the Criminal Code of Oyo State, which addresses issues of conspiracy and related criminal responsibility.
Despite the grave nature of the allegations, all three defendants pleaded not guilty during the proceedings. In response to the situation, Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi directed that they be held at the Agodi Correctional Centre while awaiting further legal advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The case has drawn considerable attention not only due to the tragic outcome but also because of Ogunwusi’s connection to the royal family. The court has set the next hearing for January 14, 2025, during which further developments are expected regarding the detailed investigation and assessment of the charges against the defendants.
This incident has sparked wider discussions about event management in Nigeria, particularly concerning large gatherings where safety measures must be strictly adhered to in order to prevent such tragedies in the future. The community and families affected by the stampede are seeking justice and accountability for the overwhelming loss experienced.
