Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has publicly disclosed his reasons for ceasing to represent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing the agency of corruption, nepotism, and declining professionalism.

In a statement shared on his verified social media account, Inibehe revealed that he was once a staunch supporter of the EFCC, actively participating in its initiatives, including the annual anti-corruption march.

He also opposed unlawful injunctions against the EFCC and filed lawsuits defending its integrity. However, recent observations of corruption and partisanship within the Commission have changed his perspective.

Inibehe’s Criticism of the EFCC

Inibehe stated, “I used to defend the EFCC vigorously and was invited to several of their events in Lagos. However, the EFCC’s operations in recent years have shown signs of corruption, partisanship, nepotism, and unprofessional conduct.

“Their methods have not inspired public confidence. The way they pamper politicians contrasts starkly with their treatment of ordinary citizens. Raiding homes at odd hours, breaking doors, and harassing occupants without offering apologies or compensation when they act unprofessionally is unacceptable.”

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the Commission’s anti-corruption fight, claiming it has taken a backseat.

Inibehe highlighted his role in defending former EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu during his controversial removal. He filed lawsuits on behalf of the HEDA Resource Centre at the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the attempts to oust Magu.

He emphasized, “No one can say I ever sought favors from the EFCC. I supported their efforts to fight corruption, but I can no longer pretend they are on track.”

Reaction to Anambra EFCC Raid

Inibehe’s statement comes amid controversy surrounding the death of Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was fatally shot during a sting operation in Awka, Anambra State.

The EFCC condemned social media narratives downplaying the tragic incident and reiterated its commitment to justice. However, Inibehe criticized the Commission’s response as lacking substance.

He questioned the raid’s timing, the presence of evidence linking the suspect to internet fraud, and whether the officers involved were properly identified.

Calls for Accountability

Inibehe urged the EFCC to prioritize transparency and professionalism to regain public trust. “The Commission must change its modus operandi and provide concrete evidence for public scrutiny,” he said.
