LegalLinkz

Nigeria faces escalating environmental and climate challenges, including desertification, flooding, oil pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, all of which threaten livelihoods, public health, and economic stability.

As Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate change is intensified by geographical diversity, with the north experiencing desert encroachment and the south facing coastal erosion and recurrent flooding, highlighting the urgent need for a coherent and responsive environmental governance framework.

This article examines Nigeria’s environmental legal and institutional framework, focusing on key statutes such as the NESREA Act and the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, as well as international commitments like the Paris Agreement and Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions.

It also highlights enforcement challenges, regulatory gaps, and the need for stronger coordination and reforms to enhance environmental protection and climate resilience.
