Emeka Obegolu, SAN, has saluted the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikorodu Branch, for what he describes as “a deliberate, structured and institution-strengthening intervention” as the Branch commemorates the 2025 International Human Rights Day with a two-day programme dedicated to accountability, access to justice, and grassroots partnership.
Speaking ahead of the observance themed “Strengthening the Justice Chain: Human Rights, Accountability & Community Partnership,” the Senior Advocate noted that the Branch has moved beyond symbolic celebration to practical engagement, especially with its Day-One facility visitations and Day-Two community dialogue and compendium launch, activities he said demonstrate “a clear understanding that human rights protection begins where the vulnerable actually live, not where speeches are delivered.”
According to him, the leadership of the Branch has shown uncommon commitment by situating the event within the realities of the Ikorodu community, bridging the gap between institutional actors and everyday citizens. He praised the Branch for not only identifying systemic challenges but actively convening platforms where solutions can emerge through collaboration among the Bar, law enforcement, civil society, and the public.
He emphasized that accountability within the justice chain cannot be achieved by one stakeholder alone and commended the Branch for championing an inclusive approach that aligns with global best practices in human rights promotion.
He affirmed that efforts such as police station monitoring, detention facility assessment, and rights-based community engagement are “the very backbone of a justice system that aspires to credibility,” and encouraged more NBA Branches to adopt similar models.
Chief Obegolu concluded by expressing confidence that the 2025 Human Rights Day activities of the NBA Ikorodu Branch will not only empower residents but also reinforce the Bar’s role as society’s conscience and defender.
