The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims that it revoked the administrative bail granted to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, on political grounds.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the anti-graft agency described allegations that the bail revocation was linked to Malami’s association with opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as false and misleading.
According to the EFCC, Malami was granted provisional administrative bail after a brief interrogation on November 28, 2025. However, the Commission disclosed that the former minister failed to meet any of the five bail conditions attached to the temporary release and showed no readiness to comply with them.
The EFCC further revealed that Malami was invited on multiple occasions to continue investigations but failed to honour the invitations, citing ill health.

The statement explained that Malami was expected to report for further interrogation on December 1, 2025. However, through a letter dated December 4, 2025, he requested permission to attend to health issues. The Commission said it granted the request on compassionate grounds, despite the fact that his bail conditions had not been fulfilled.
The EFCC added that although Malami claimed ill health, he neither submitted a medical report nor provided any credible medical evidence to support his claim.
The Commission stated that it could not allow the latitude granted on health grounds to stall investigations indefinitely. Consequently, Malami was invited again on December 8, 2025, for further interrogation and was detained pending compliance with his bail conditions.
Addressing claims that it barred Malami from granting media interviews or participating in political activities, the EFCC described such assertions as “untenable” and “bogus,” stressing that it has no interest in the political affiliations of its suspects.
Reaffirming its apolitical stance, the Commission noted that investigations and prosecutions are carried out without regard to party affiliation, citing the recent arraignment of a former governor and senior member of the ruling party over alleged contract fraud.

The EFCC advised the former minister to focus on fulfilling the bail conditions he acknowledged and signed on November 28, 2025, rather than engaging in what it described as false media narratives.
The Commission also urged Malami to cooperate fully with investigators to allow the investigation process to proceed without obstruction.
