The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced its intention to impose stringent penalties on industries that violate data privacy policies and jeopardize citizens’ privacy rights.
This declaration was made by the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, in a statement issued by the Commission’s Media Department.
Dr. Olatunji emphasized that the enforcement aligns with the NDPC’s mandate to secure the integrity of citizens’ data. He warned data controllers and processors in critical sectors—including banking, healthcare, telecommunications, insurance, education, and government agencies—to adhere strictly to data protection regulations or face severe consequences.
“For data controllers and processors, there is going to be massive enforcement. We have never really issued any fine, but going forward, you’ll hear us giving heavy penalties,” Olatunji stated.
Advancing Data Protection with Partnerships and Strategic Plans
Dr. Olatunji highlighted the Commission’s proactive measures to strengthen data protection, which include signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with reputable organizations such as the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC), the Data Privacy Office of Canada, and the Dubai International Financial Centre Authority (DIFC).
The NDPC also plans to transition to the second phase of its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (NDP-SRAP 2023-2027) in 2025. This phase aims to foster job creation in the data privacy and protection sector, particularly for young Nigerians.
“There are a lot of data controllers and processors looking for skilled personnel. Those trained and certified in 2024 will be launched into the job market in 2025 to work with these organizations,” Dr. Olatunji noted.
Promoting Awareness and Citizen Rights
The NDPC announced plans to enhance awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians about their rights under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA). The Commission is committed to ensuring citizens understand the importance of data privacy and empowering them to hold data controllers and processors accountable for any breaches.
“The Commission aims to educate citizens about their rights and remind data controllers and processors of their obligations under the NDPA,” Dr. Olatunji added.
The NDPC’s initiatives reflect a firm commitment to safeguarding citizens’ data while fostering a secure and privacy-conscious digital environment in Nigeria.
