Canadian Woman Arrested for Smuggling Synthetic Cannabis into Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, for importing a large quantity of synthetic cannabis, known as ‘Canadian Loud,’ into Nigeria.

NDLEA operatives apprehended her during the inward clearance of passengers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on October 3, 2024. Adrienne was travelling from Canada on a KLM airline flight and was found with 74 parcels of the illicit substance weighing 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of her three bags.

This was Adrienne’s first trip to Nigeria, and in her statement to authorities, she admitted that she was recruited through an online platform to traffic the drugs for a payment of CAD 10,000. She explained that she accepted the offer because she needed the money to fund her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.

In another related operation, NDLEA operatives at the Tincan seaport in Lagos intercepted a shipment of 100 parcels of ‘Canadian Loud,’ weighing 50 kilograms, on October 3, 2024. The consignment was packed in five jumbo bags, each containing 20 parcels, and was concealed in a container along with four imported vehicles.

The container, which had been cleared from the ESS Libra Bonded Terminal in Ikorodu, was traced by NDLEA operatives to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where the drugs were discovered hidden in a Toyota Sienna bus. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

These busts highlight the increasing use of synthetic cannabis, particularly ‘Canadian Loud,’ in drug trafficking operations targeting Nigeria. The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to curb the flow of illicit drugs into the country, with investigations ongoing to identify other accomplices involved in these transnational drug trafficking schemes.
