Folakemi Falana, daughter of human rights lawyer Femi Falana, has vehemently denied allegations of bribery and corruption involving her father and brother, rapper Falz, concerning Bobrisky’s alleged prison sentence.
The accusations, brought forth by social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), claimed that the Falanas were involved in a ₦15 million bribe to clear Bobrisky of money laundering charges.
In a viral video, VDM accused unnamed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials of accepting a bribe to drop charges against Bobrisky. Responding on Instagram, Folakemi called the allegations baseless and defamatory, revealing that her family had taken legal action.
“Two different letters from Falana & Falana on behalf of our clients Femi Falana SAN and Folarin Falz Falana, giving VDM 24 hours to retract his defamatory statements or risk legal action,” Folakemi wrote.
She clarified that the claims circulated online, suggesting her family helped Bobrisky secure favourable treatment in prison, were false. Folakemi stated that neither her father nor brother had ever met Bobrisky, and no discussions about a presidential pardon had occurred.
She explained that Bobrisky had only contacted Falz asking for money to stay in the VIP section of the prison, with no mention of a pardon.
“For the record, anyone can write to the president requesting a pardon. Bobrisky never approached anyone in my family or our firm for this,” she added.
In a direct message to VDM, Folakemi warned of legal consequences, saying, “Since you refuse to retract, @verydarkblackman, see you in court.”
EFCC Launches Investigation
In response to the allegations, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede ordered an immediate investigation and invited Bobrisky and VDM to assist investigators in uncovering the truth behind the alleged ₦15 million bribe.
NBA Calls for Independent Probe
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also weighed in, calling on the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Office of the National Security Adviser to launch an independent investigation into the allegations against EFCC officers.
The NBA stressed that any officers found guilty should be dismissed and prosecuted to uphold the justice system’s integrity.
