The die is cast. The campaigns are over. The mandate has been given. Now, the real work begins.
In one of the most dramatic and closely watched branch elections in recent memory, members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), have elected Philemon Yakubu, SAN as their new Chairman, bringing to a close weeks of uncertainty, controversies, delays, and institutional challenges that tested the resilience of the Bar.
The election, which eventually held after the constitution of a Caretaker Committee to steady the process, witnessed contests in only two offices, Chairman and Social Secretary, while all other positions were returned unopposed.
In the headline contest, Philemon Yakubu, SAN secured a decisive victory over Anthony Enahoro Idoko, the immediate past Vice Chairman, earning the confidence of members to lead Nigeria’s flagship NBA branch into a new era.
The road to victory was neither smooth nor predictable. The election process was marked by anxiety, heated debates, and questions over timing and administration.
Yet, when it mattered most, the Unity Bar demonstrated that its democratic tradition remains stronger than its differences. Members spoke through the ballot, and the outcome has now become part of the branch’s history.
For many lawyers, this election was never just about personalities. It was about the future of the Unity Bar, its welfare, professional development, institutional reforms, young lawyers, the practice environment, and the collective vision for a stronger and more united Branch.
With victory secured, attention must now shift from campaigns to performance.
The inspiring manifesto that resonated with members was built on bold commitments: strengthening lawyers’ welfare, improving continuing legal education, promoting technology-driven administration, enhancing engagement with the Bench and public institutions, creating opportunities for young lawyers, enforcing the NBA Remuneration Order, and fostering a truly united Bar.
Those promises now form the benchmark against which this administration will inevitably be measured.
The celebration is well deserved, but history teaches that elections confer not only honour, they impose responsibility. The confidence reposed in the new leadership must now be rewarded with purposeful governance, transparent administration, inclusive leadership, and measurable results.
As congratulations continue to pour in from across the legal community, one message rings louder than every applause:
The era of promises has ended. The era of delivery has begun.
The Unity Bar has spoken. The mandate has been given. The expectations are enormous.
