Academia Forges the Bar; Possibility Shapes its Future By Prof. Foluke Dada-Lawanson

As a Professor of Law, I have encountered brilliant young lawyers whose dreams stretch beyond the confines of routine litigation, whose curiosity goes deeper than the mere application of case law, and whose deepest passion lies in shaping ideas rather than merely applying them. To every young lawyer drawn to the world of academia, let me say this without hesitation: your contribution is not secondary, it is, in fact, foundational.

There is a pervasive misconception that the classroom is a waiting room for those who “could not practise.” I firmly reject this notion. The academic environment is, and must be recognized as, the very powerhouse where doctrines are born, where legal reasoning is sharpened, and where the indispensable language of justice is crafted. Every landmark decision, every successful legislative reform, and every necessary shift in jurisprudence first existed as a thought, often an academic thought, nurtured within these halls.

Academia affords you the profound privilege to question, to push intellectual boundaries, to think without the commercial and procedural constraints of immediate practice, and to build the sophisticated legal frameworks that millions will one day rely upon. You seize the unique opportunity to influence the profession from its very roots, shaping not only what lawyers know, but fundamentally how they think.

If you feel called to research, to write, to teach, or to engage deeply with complex legal ideas, I implore you: follow that calling boldly. Your path may be different, but it is certainly no less impactful.

The Bar’s essential work may be to fight today’s battles in the courtroom, but it is academia that equips society with the theoretical tools and intellectual insight required to win tomorrow’s.

Do not for a moment underestimate the power of your specialized voice, your intense curiosity, or your distinctive perspective. The future of legal practice will be defined not only by those who appear before judges, but also, and perhaps more profoundly, by those who educate, enlighten, and expand the very possibilities of the law.

Stand tall in your academic aspirations. Academia is not the edge of legal practice, it is the indispensable engine of its evolution. And the world desperately needs your mind.
