Court Remands Father for Allegedly Raping Daughter in Ekiti

A 42-year-old man, Christopher Israel, has been remanded in the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre by the Magistrates’ Court over allegations of raping his 22-year-old daughter during her visit. The defendant, whose residential address was not provided, faces charges of rape and assault, according to the prosecutor, Inspector Olubu Apata.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 21, 2024, in Ado-Ekiti. Apata told the court that Israel’s daughter had come to visit him when he allegedly attacked her, resulting in injuries as she struggled against him. The charges are based on Sections 265 and 256 of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021, which outline severe penalties for sexual and physical assault.

Inspector Apata requested that Israel be remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), and the court, presided over by Magistrate Olubunmi Bamidele, agreed. The defendant’s plea was not taken during the hearing, as the court awaits further directives from the DPP. Magistrate Bamidele then adjourned the case to November 6 for further mention.

This case adds to the increasing number of sexual violence cases within families in the region, highlighting concerns over domestic abuse and the legal system’s role in addressing such crimes. The Ekiti State government, along with advocacy groups, has continued to push for more vigorous enforcement of laws protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly against domestic sexual violence.
