The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced an investigation into suspicious photographs, including images suspected of being generated using artificial intelligence, in Nigeria’s preliminary voters’ register.
The development has drawn attention to the integrity of electoral records as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.
INEC explained that the preliminary register published on its website on 26 October was the same version displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide between 9 and 15 October. The exercise allowed members of the public to inspect voter records and submit claims or objections.
According to the commission, questionable registration entries had already been identified and flagged during the physical display. It said a review was under way and that appropriate corrective measures would be taken following verification.
INEC also clarified that the online register does not yet reflect all ongoing data-cleaning activities. The version currently available is preliminary and is not the final certified register.
The commission is investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses. The origin of the images and the extent of any irregularities remain subject to verification.
INEC has scheduled 15 December 2026 for certification of the final Register of Voters.
The investigation will be important in determining whether the suspicious entries resulted from data-processing failures, fraudulent submissions or other causes. The commission has yet to publish its final findings.
