Five Congolese nationals have been rescued from a hotel in Ibadan following an investigation into suspected human trafficking.
Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit carried out the operation at Bollarz Hotel in the Araromi area after receiving intelligence about the occupants’ circumstances.
According to The Sun, police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade announced the rescue in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14.
The five adults, aged between 23 and 33, allegedly travelled to Nigeria after a man promised them better economic opportunities. Police identified the wanted man only as Smith, a national of the Republic of Benin.
The suspect was absent when officers arrived at the hotel. Investigators are working to locate him and establish the circumstances surrounding the group’s journey.
The rescued persons received medical attention and examinations. The Commissioner of Police directed that they be handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service’s Oyo State Command for further action.
SaharaReporters also reported the operation on October 15, citing the police statement. No conviction has been recorded in connection with the allegations.
