Three sisters have drowned after the canoe conveying them capsized at Tiga Dam in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to SaharaReporters, the victims were identified as Murjanatu, Atikatu and Bilkisu, popularly known as Amira. They were residents of the Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community.
Canoe Overturns on Tiga Dam
The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, while the sisters were travelling on the dam.
The canoe reportedly overturned, and the three girls drowned before assistance could reach them. The cause of the accident had not been officially established at the time of publication.
Community Thrown Into Mourning
The tragedy has plunged the victims’ family and the entire Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community into mourning.
The Chairperson of Tudun Wada Local Government Area, Sa’adatu Salisu Soja, described the deaths as a painful and devastating loss.
She extended her condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased, grant them Aljannatul Firdaus and give their relatives the strength to bear the loss.
Fire Service Not Officially Notified
The Kano State Fire Service said it had not received an official report of the incident as of Sunday.
Its spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, said the agency became aware of the tragedy through media reports and the condolence message issued by the local government chairperson.
The number of people originally aboard the canoe and whether life jackets were available were not disclosed in the reports reviewed.
