Tragedy As Gunmen Murder APC Chairman, Kidnap Passenger In Kogi

Gunmen have killed Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, identified in several reports as the All Progressives Congress chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to Naija News, Yunusa was attacked on Thursday, August 27, 2026, along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.

The Kogi State Police Command said the incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. when armed assailants reportedly emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists travelling along the highway.

Yunusa Found Dead Inside Vehicle

Following the attack, security personnel discovered a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH abandoned along the road.

The driver, identified by the police as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle.

Another occupant of the car was allegedly forced into the surrounding bush by the assailants. The victim’s identity had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the police statement.

Security Operatives Comb Forest

Police spokesperson ASP Afusat Oyiza Saliu said the Command had mobilised personnel in collaboration with other security agencies to search the surrounding forests.

The operation is aimed at locating and rescuing the abducted occupant and tracking down those responsible for Yunusa’s killing.

The police said all available intelligence and operational resources were being deployed along the affected corridor.

Remains Taken to Grimard Hospital

Yunusa’s remains were evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy as investigators continued to pursue available leads.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed sustained security operations along the Itobe–Ochadamu corridor.

He also ordered personnel to ensure that the attackers were identified, arrested and brought to justice.

Kogi Government Mourns Yunusa

The Kogi State Government later confirmed that Yunusa had been buried in Anyigba on Friday in accordance with Islamic rites.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo described his death as a painful loss to his family, the APC and the people of Kogi State.

Represented at the burial by his deputy, the governor promised stronger security measures along the Itobe–Anyigba road and other vulnerable routes.

Police Urge Vigilance

The Police Command advised motorists and residents travelling along the route to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or movements to security agencies.

No arrest had been announced, while the search for the abducted occupant remained ongoing at the time of publication.

Editor’s Note: The police and several media reports described Yunusa as the Dekina APC chairman. However, the Kogi State Government referred to him as the former APC Dekina Local Government Divisional Chairman in its condolence statement.
