Abubakar Malami bail: The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered that former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of their bail applications.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who presided over the matter, adjourned ruling on the bail requests to January 7, 2026, after hearing arguments from counsel to the defendants and the prosecution.

Malami, his son, and a third defendant, Hajia Bashir Asabe, a director of Ramadiya Property Limited, are standing trial over an alleged ₦9 billion money laundering charge instituted by the Federal Government.

In his brief ruling, Justice Nwite explained that the court was currently on vacation and that he had several pending matters requiring attention, necessitating the adjournment of the ruling on bail.

Leading the defence team, Joseph Daudu, SAN, urged the court to admit the defendants to bail, arguing that the charges were bailable and that the defendants were willing to comply with any conditions the court might impose.

However, counsel to the prosecution and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Emmanuel Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the bail applications, urging the court to refuse the request in view of the gravity of the allegations and the ongoing investigation.

All three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges upon their arraignment.
