Nigeria has taken a decisive step towards modernising its tax administration system with the formal rollout of the National E-Invoicing Regime by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The initiative, introduced under the Electronic Fiscal System (EFS), establishes a mandatory digital invoicing framework for Large Taxpayers and marks a significant milestone in the country’s drive for transparency, efficiency, and real-time tax compliance.

The National E-Invoicing Regime follows the successful conclusion of a pilot phase that commenced in November 2024. During the pilot, FIRS worked closely with selected Large Taxpayers, undertaking comprehensive onboarding, system integration, and stakeholder consultations across critical sectors of the economy.

The transition from pilot to full implementation signals FIRS’ confidence in the system’s readiness and its capacity to support Nigeria’s evolving fiscal architecture.

In a detailed analysis titled “Digitalizing Tax in Nigeria: Understanding the National E-Invoicing Mandate for Major Corporations,” Oyetola Muyiwa Atoyebi, SAN, FCIArb (U.K) (Notary Public) examines the scope, rationale, and far-reaching implications of the new regime. The article outlines the legal, technical, and compliance obligations imposed on affected taxpayers, while highlighting how digital invoicing will enhance real-time monitoring of taxable transactions, curb revenue leakages, and strengthen overall tax administration.

According to the analysis, the E-Invoicing framework is not merely a technological upgrade but a structural reform designed to align Nigeria’s tax system with global best practices. By automating invoice generation and reporting, the regime promotes accountability, reduces disputes, and provides FIRS with timely access to transaction data necessary for effective enforcement and policy planning.

As Nigeria deepens its digital tax transformation, stakeholders are urged to proactively align their internal systems with the new requirements to ensure seamless compliance and avoid regulatory exposure.
