President Bola Tinubu has formally sought the confirmation of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). This development follows a letter from the President, which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a session on Tuesday, according to Legalinkz.com.
Justice Kekere-Ekun has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since August, following the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. President Tinubu had sworn her into acting, ensuring the judiciary’s leadership continuity.
In the letter to the Senate, President Tinubu referenced Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which gives the president the authority to appoint a Chief Justice, subject to the recommendation of the National Judicial Commission (NJC) and confirmation by the Senate. He expressed confidence in Kekere-Ekun’s capabilities and urged the Senate for a swift confirmation process.
The nomination has now been referred to the Senate Committee of the Whole for further deliberation, with discussions scheduled for Wednesday.
As the Senate deliberates on Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun’s confirmation, more updates will follow. Stay tuned to Legalinkz.com for the latest on this developing story.
