Abuja, Nigeria, The future of Nigeria’s transportation system took centre stage today as the 2nd Abuja International Railway Conference and Exhibition opened in the Federal Capital Territory. The high-profile event, declared open by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, drew together policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and stakeholders from across the transport and infrastructure value chain to deliberate on the transformation of rail transport as a driver of economic growth.

In a statement, the President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Life Bencher, confirmed that he had the honour of leading the Chamber’s delegation to the opening ceremony alongside the 2nd Deputy President of ACCI, Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong.

Chief Obegolu explained that the Conference provides a unique platform for dialogue on strategies to modernise Nigeria’s railway infrastructure, expand regional connectivity, and foster public-private partnerships to drive sustainable investment. “Rail transport is central to unlocking Nigeria’s full economic potential, from facilitating trade and easing the movement of goods, to reducing the pressure on our roads and creating opportunities for industrialisation,” he noted.

The ACCI, through its National Policy Advocacy Centre (NPAC), is playing a pivotal role as a major organiser and stakeholder of the Conference in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Transportation. According to Chief Obegolu, the Chamber remains committed to policy advocacy and business innovation aimed at advancing Nigeria’s transport ecosystem.

The Chamber’s engagement in this Conference reflects our conviction that infrastructure development, particularly rail transport, is a catalyst for economic diversification, regional integration, and national growth,” he stated.

The two-day event features technical sessions, exhibitions, and networking opportunities where stakeholders will explore themes such as sustainable financing for railway projects, adoption of new technologies, and integration of rail with other transport modes.

Chief Obegolu added that he looks forward to delivering his thoughts at tomorrow’s session, where he will highlight practical pathways for sustainable railway development in Nigeria. He reaffirmed the Chamber’s resolve to continue providing platforms for dialogue, collaboration, and investment that will support the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda.

“The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry will keep working to ensure that Nigeria’s transport sector is not only modernised but also aligned with global best practices. Rail transport must become a reliable backbone for trade, commerce, and industry in our nation,” he concluded.
