NBA Citizens’ Liberties Committee Decries Persistent Disobedience of Court Orders

The Citizens’ Liberties Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed deep concern over the growing trend of disobedience and lack of enforcement of court judgments and orders by government institutions and influential individuals in Nigeria.

Addressing pressmen, the Chairman of the Committee, Nuhu J. Egya, Esq., lamented that this persistent disregard for judicial authority poses a grave threat to the nation’s justice system. “It is quite uncomfortable that today, many Court Orders remain unenforced and disobeyed—an attitude capable of eroding the trust and confidence of the people in the judiciary,” he said.

Egya cited notable cases, including the judgment of the Court of Appeal ordering the reinstatement of Comrade Tajudeen Baruwa as President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), which the Federal Government has failed to implement.

He further recalled that in March 2025, the Federal High Court declared the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan illegal and recommended her recall, yet the Senate disregarded the ruling and instead extended her suspension indefinitely. Equally troubling, he noted, is the Federal Government’s failure to act on a Supreme Court judgment affirming the autonomy of local governments and ordering direct allocation of statutory funds to the 774 local councils.

The Committee Chairman called on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Senate to immediately obey and enforce all pending court orders across the country. He emphasized that the disregard of lawful judgments undermines democracy and weakens citizens’ faith in the rule of law.

Egya also pointed out that the national leadership of the NBA under Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, is not unmindful of these disturbing developments and is expected to respond in line with its proactive stance on upholding justice and accountability.
