A Department of State Services (DSS) officer, Mr. Anyim Chukwudi Christian, accused of attempted murder, has reportedly escaped from police custody in Ebonyi State. Chukwudi was arrested for a brutal assault on legal practitioner, Chief Okeke Decency Onu, during a land dispute-related attack at DEJAS restaurant, Ishiagu, on April 6, 2024.
Alongside his brother, Anyim Eugene Anyata, and an accomplice, Chukwudi allegedly smashed beer bottles on the lawyer’s head, leaving him with severe injuries, including a cracked skull.
Despite being initially granted bail, Chukwudi defied police summons and allegedly boasted about DSS immunity. Re-arrested in January 2025 after resisting officers, he again escaped before arraignment.
The Nigerian Police has since written to the DSS seeking official confirmation of his identity. The case, linked to a long-standing land dispute, remains under investigation, while the victim has petitioned the NBA for protection and intervention.
