In a tragic turn of events, Salisu, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was shot and killed during a raid on suspected cybercriminals, commonly known as “Yahoo boys,” in Awka, Anambra State. The deceased has been flown to Sokoto State for burial in line with Islamic rites.
SaharaReporters gathered that the EFCC operatives, dispatched from the Enugu Zonal Command, arrived in Awka early Friday morning for a mission to apprehend internet fraud suspects.
The team successfully conducted an initial raid, seizing items such as credit cards and four luxury vehicles.
However, during their second operation at another location, tragedy struck. When the operatives attempted to arrest a suspect who refused to open his door, alleging they could be kidnappers or robbers, he reportedly opened fire.
Salisu, the lead operative, sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to his wounds at a private hospital. Another officer was also injured during the attack.
Challenges Faced by the EFCC Operatives
According to sources, the operatives were not equipped with bulletproof vests during the operation. After Salisu was shot, the team rushed him to the General Hospital in Awka but found no doctors available, only nurses who referred them to a private facility.
At Amaco Hospital, Salisu was pronounced dead, while the injured officer required a blood transfusion.

Official Reactions
The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating:
“Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details shall be communicated.”
Additionally, it was reported that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, visited Awka to oversee the transportation of the deceased to Sokoto and to press for prompt action by the police.
