Three officers of the Nigeria Police Force have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The incident, which occurred on September 4, 2024, has sparked outrage within the community.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, responded swiftly, directing the Homicide section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
The officers implicated in the tragic incident have been identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip. They are all part of the Department of Operations at the Kwara State Command.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it was confirmed that the officers have been detained for further investigation. ACP Adejobi stated that the IGP is deeply saddened by the incident, expressing his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student.
“The IGP expresses his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. He acknowledges the profound grief and loss caused by this unfortunate act and reassures the family and members of the public that justice will be served,” the statement read.
Ishola, a National Diploma II student in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, was allegedly killed under mysterious circumstances in the Fate Area of Ilorin, leading to widespread calls for justice.
The IGP has assured that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, with the officers facing the full weight of the law if found guilty.
