The acting Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Olufemi Oluyede, has reportedly been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general, signaling that he may soon be formally confirmed as the Chief of Army Staff.
Sources from the Presidential Villa in Abuja confirm that Oluyede was decorated with the new rank in a private ceremony held at the villa. The presidency is expected to release an official statement on the matter later today, providing further details.
Oluyede’s recent appointment followed concerns over the health of the incumbent Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who is currently abroad for medical treatment. President Bola Tinubu appointed Oluyede to the acting role last week, entrusting him with the leadership of the Nigerian Army during Lagbaja’s absence.
While it remains unclear what will happen with Lagbaja’s position, Oluyede’s decoration suggests a possible permanent transition. As a respected figure in the military, Oluyede brings extensive experience to his new role.
His recent post as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna, has earned him significant recognition, with many in the defense community supporting his suitability for the role of COAS.
Ekiti State Governor Lauds Oluyede’s Appointment
Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has expressed congratulations to Oluyede, an Ikere-Ekiti native, on his elevation to the army’s top position. The governor expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for selecting Oluyede and highlighted the general’s impressive service record and integrity.
In a statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, Oyebanji remarked that Oluyede’s leadership of the Infantry Corps has already demonstrated his capacity for the challenges of the COAS role.
“Major-General Olufemi Oluyede’s achievements and depth of experience make him a natural fit for this position, and I am confident that he will lead the Nigerian Army with strength and distinction,” Governor Oyebanji stated.
Military and National Reactions Awaited
Military analysts and officers have shown keen interest in the transition. Some speculate that if Oluyede’s role is made permanent, the Nigerian Army may see a series of strategic shifts aimed at strengthening the army’s operational effectiveness. More updates from the presidency and military authorities are anticipated soon.
