The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities, which includes the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has announced an indefinite strike beginning at midnight on October 27, 2024. The decision comes after months of unresolved disputes over withheld salaries.

The strike notice, signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, was sent to branch chairmen across the country. It explained the shift from the original strike date of October 23, attributing the delay to the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, which concluded on October 24. The unions adjusted the strike date for better coordination, ensuring that NASU and SSANU branches would act together.

In their statement, NASU and SSANU expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s “lack of commitment” in addressing their grievances. They highlighted that, despite President Bola Tinubu’s alleged authorization for a partial release of funds, the Ministry of Finance has yet to execute the directive. This continued delay, they stated, demonstrates the government’s insincerity regarding their demands for salary payments.

The circular emphasized, “It is on record that JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of government to our cause is in doubt.”

JAC assured members of its determination to continue the fight until all demands are met, expressing appreciation for the patience and commitment shown by union members across the country.
