The Stakeholder’s call came during a dialogue on equitable access to justice for PWDs, organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), with support from the European Union under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC). The event addressed structural challenges, including infrastructural, financial, and communication barriers PWDs face in accessing justice.

Prof. Cheluchi Onyemelukwe, an expert in migration law and international human rights law, highlighted the importance of awareness creation. She stressed the urgent need for accessible courtrooms and fair hearings for PWDs through services like sign language interpretation.

Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, called for public awareness campaigns and the integration of assistive technologies to support PWDs in the justice system. He emphasized the responsibility of the legal system to not only protect but empower vulnerable groups.

Dr. Glory Essien, representing the Controller General of Correctional Service, emphasized the importance of reforms to improve the experiences of PWDs in the criminal justice system, particularly ensuring that facilities accommodate their needs during incarceration.
