Freedom fighter Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has submitted a petition to the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, advocating for the creation of a Yoruba nation. The petition, filed on behalf of Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, the leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, seeks the UK government’s intervention in their quest for a separate country primarily for indigenous Yoruba people.
The submission was announced by Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, via social media. He stated, “At exactly 14:00 hrs, Dr. Chief Sunday Igboho delivered a petition to the UK Prime Minister on behalf of Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, and Olayomi Koiki, his spokesman @10DowningStreet.”
Sunday Igboho has been a prominent figure in the push for the Yoruba nation. His efforts align with the broader movement led by Prof. Akintoye, which aims to achieve self-determination for the Yoruba people.
Previously, Prof. Akintoye accused the Nigerian government of attempting to persuade Igboho to abandon the agitation. He revealed that during Igboho’s detention in the Benin Republic, a former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), allegedly offered a deal promising billions of naira if Igboho would renounce his pursuit of a Yoruba nation. However, Igboho reportedly refused to accept the offer, maintaining his stance on the creation of an independent Yoruba nation.
