A coalition of opposition politicians under the G-100 platform has intensified consultations aimed at persuading opposition parties to field a common presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

According to Naija News, the coalition met with the House of Representatives Minority Caucus on Tuesday as part of ongoing efforts to build a united opposition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.

The delegation was led by the Convener of the G-100 and former Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Mallam Salihu Lukman, while the House Minority Leader, Hon. Fred Agbedi, led members of the Minority Caucus.

Speaking during the meeting, Lukman expressed concern over what he described as the fragmented state of opposition politics in Nigeria, warning that a divided opposition could repeat the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

He urged opposition leaders to put aside personal political ambitions and work collectively to present a formidable challenge in 2027.

According to Naija News, Lukman argued that another four years of APC leadership would be detrimental to the country and stressed the need for urgent political collaboration among opposition parties.

He disclosed that the G-100 had already begun consultations with leaders of six opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Action Peoples Movement (APM), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The consultations, he said, involved presidential candidates, vice-presidential candidates and party chairmen, with discussions centred on the possibility of adopting a common political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Lukman also announced plans to convene a National Summit of Opposition Leaders on August 31, describing it as an opportunity to consolidate ongoing negotiations and build consensus across political parties.

Responding on behalf of the Minority Caucus, Fred Agbedi declared the caucus’ full support for the G-100 initiative, revealing that the caucus had already commenced similar consultations with opposition leaders nationwide.

Agbedi described the collaboration as a shared commitment to strengthening the opposition and providing Nigerians with a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

Former House of Representatives member Sergius Ogun also expressed confidence that the opposition could defeat President Tinubu if it successfully rallied behind a single presidential candidate.

The G-100 maintained that its objective is to facilitate negotiations among opposition leaders and encourage a united front rather than promote the ambitions of any individual politician.
