Ubani made the call in his keynote address as Chairman of the Occasion and keynote speaker at the NBA Oron Branch Law Week, themed “Legal Administration and Legal Practice in a Secured Environment,” during the foundation-laying ceremony for the NBA Oron House–Bar Centre.
He described the project as more than a construction initiative, saying it represents a practical investment in the future of the legal profession and the institutional development of the branch.
According to him, lawyers who are expected to defend citizens’ rights and uphold the rule of law deserve a secure and dignified professional environment where they can meet clients, exchange ideas, undertake continuing legal education and advance the collective interests of the Bar.
“The dignity of the legal profession should be reflected not only in our wigs and gowns, not only in our courtroom advocacy, not only in our titles and professional accomplishments, but also in the institutions we establish and the environments we create for professional service,” he said.
Ubani Identifies Five Dimensions of Security
The former NBA Ikeja Branch Chairman identified physical, professional, institutional, digital and information, and economic and operational security as essential elements of a secure environment for legal practice.
He noted that lawyers must be able to discharge their duties without threats, unlawful interference, retaliation or intimidation, stressing that the independence of the Bar is critical to the independence of the justice system.
He also urged the branch to ensure that the proposed centre is protected as an enduring institutional asset rather than an extension of any individual administration or faction.
On the operational side, Ubani called for sustainable maintenance planning, appropriate security infrastructure, reliable utilities, secure information systems and sound financial management to ensure the centre remains functional long after construction.
