KADUNA, NIGERIA — What was meant to be a day of celebration turned into a theater of conflict and narrow escapes as troops of the Nigerian Army intercepted terrorists in Ariko Village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
In a high-stakes operation conducted on Easter Sunday, the military successfully rescued 31 civilians who had been abducted during church services. However, the victory was dampened by the grim recovery of five victims who had already been killed by their captors.
The intervention followed a distress call alerting the military to a coordinated abduction at an ECWA Church within the community. According to an official statement from the Nigerian Army, troops mobilized rapidly, utilizing local intelligence and the guidance of Ariko community members to track the fleeing criminals.
Upon making contact, a “fierce firefight” ensued. The Army reported that its forces overwhelmed the terrorists with superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to abandon their hostages.

Total Rescued: 31 civilians.
-
Medical Care: One rescued victim sustained injuries during the ordeal and is currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility.
-
Terrorist Casualties: While the attackers managed to escape into the bush, the Army noted significant blood trails along their retreat routes, indicating heavy casualties among the terrorist ranks.
Conflicting Death Tolls and Targeted Attacks
While the official Army statement confirmed the recovery of five bodies, local sources and reports from The PUNCH and SaharaReporters suggest the carnage may be higher. Mark Bawa, the Councillor representing Awon Ward, informed the press that at least seven people have been verified dead.
According to community accounts, the attackers arrived in large numbers and laid siege to two worship centers: First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church. Worshippers were reportedly surrounded during the early morning hours, with the attackers shooting sporadically to instill terror before dragging several congregants into the nearby forest.
The Nigerian Army has since intensified its “search-and-rescue” operations, deploying additional troops to Kachia LGA to comb the enclaves for remaining captives and to prevent further incursions.
“Collective vigilance is essential for sustaining peace and security,” the Army stated, urging the public to continue providing timely information to security agencies.
The military reaffirmed its dedication to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens through coordinated efforts with local stakeholders.
